âHello?â
There was nothing but silence as Marc entered the steakhouse. It was just after lunch, but Marc knew Jonah would be here already. He always got started this time of day. Besides, his truck was in the parking lot.
He heard a loud bang coming from the kitchen and knew someone was back there. Although Marc felt weird about making himself at home here, what choice did he have? Nobody was answering him.
All morning, Marc had been trying to pull his focus back to work. After dinner with Kelsey last nightâa.k.a. the best date of his lifeâhe felt like he was floating on air. Just remembering that kiss got him lost in his thoughts, and the next thing he knew, twenty minutes had gone by and his to-do list was going nowhere.
Which was exactly why he was here at the Lone Star Steakhouse when he normally would have put this task off for as long as he could. May as well get something done today, and this was a task that was sure to take his mind off Kelseyâtemporarily, anyway.
When he was only a few feet away from the kitchen, the door flew open, revealing Jonah standing there wearing a too-tight T-shirt and jeans. Dude was always trying to show off his muscles, although Marc had no idea when the guy had time to work out.
âHey.â That word from Jonah accompanied an expression that Marc couldnât quite read. No way was he happy to see Marc, but he didnât look unhappy, either. He also didnât seem to be about to angrily throw him out of here.
âHi,â Marc said.
He knew his own greeting sounded overly cautious. They had a lot to work out if they were ever going to have a relationship outside of work. But Marc was well-practiced in the art of separating his work life from his personal feelings. If he only did business with people he liked, he wouldnât be where he was today.
The difference was that Jonah was blood. Blood was supposed to overcome issues, right?
âI came to talk to you about the steakhouse,â Marc said.
It was odd to refer to the place he was standing in like it was a separate location. But he didnât want to bring up Jonahâs mom or the contracts sheâd left behind. That would get a little too close to talking about parents, and he needed to keep things confined to business right now.
âWant something to drink?â Jonah walked over to the bar, pulling out a couple of glasses and starting to fill one with ice.
âJust some waterâs fine.â Marc walked over to the bar and climbed up on one of the stools. May as well take a seat if they were going to discuss this, and he didnât want to commit to sitting at a table.
âI hear your dadâs getting out of jail soon.â Jonah dropped that sentence at the same time he set the glass of water in front of Marc.
Marc picked it up and took a sip, surprised by how dry his throat had suddenly gotten.
